Understanding Poker Terminologies
The game of poker and Texas Hold'em poker is a game of betting. There would be no thrill in the game if your only incentive was to have a superior hand over your opponent. Betting signifies that you are risking the loss of something precious in order to acquire something valuable. Smart betting is just as significant in winning poker as the cards you receive. Here are some simple betting structures and terms:
Betting: To risk a certain amount based on pre-arranged game rules.
The Check: Here, no amount of money is placed in the pot but the player is permitted to remain in the game. But, the player who checks is demanded to call or raise any bet placed by succeeding bettors, unless the bettor likewise checks. Any wager by one of the players during a particular hand must be equaled or increased by all players that have checked before.
Call: To place an equal amount of money made by a betting player.
Fold: The player does not get involved in the betting process further, because it appears that they cannot have a winning hand, and chooses to stay out of that round by putting the cards, in a face down position, in front of them.
Raise: The player makes a bet that is higher than the bet of the previous bettors. All players desiring to get involved in the round must either "call" by putting an equal amount of money, or chips, into the pot, or "raise", by making a bet higher than the previous wager. Checking is not allowed at this point, so a player must call, raise, or fold.
Fixed Limit: Wagers are restricted to a certain pre-arranged amount at the onset of the game.
Spread Limit: Any amount of bet must fall within a certain determined boundary that offers more flexibility, compared to fixed limit poker.
Pot Limit: Pot limit poker permits players to raise their bet to an amount equivalent to the pot amount.
No Limit: Here, players are allowed to make a bet, or call a "raise", on any amount without limitation.
Ante: Known as a "blind," an ante a specific amount that each player needs to place into the pot to begin the round of poker. The word blind is utilized because the players are placing money bets, or chips, into the pot before being dealt any cards, and are thus said to be "betting blind."
These are basic terms that beginning poker players should know before playing poker.
